GREAT WESTERN GLADIOLUS CATALOGUE 2009

After yet another mainly disappointing 'summer' we hope we can cheer you up by offering a good selection of gladiolus to look forward to next year.

If you are new to gladiolus growing or showing, may we suggest that you stick to Dutch varieties to begin with? Try a Big Guns or Polder collection to give you a varied selection, especially if you want to compete at your local show.  The North American varieties tend to be more challenging and are for the seasoned exhibitor.

The past couple of poor growing seasons seem to have caused problems everywhere.  We ourselves have had a very disappointing year with far too much rain and very strong winds blowing non-stop from the north east rather than  our usual 'sou-westers'.  The Dutch growers who supply the bulk of our stock have also struggled especially when it comes to harvesting the corms, as the wet conditions made it difficult to get on the fields.  Possibly in a rush to get it all done, some mistakes occurred, as there seem to have been a higher than usual proportion of rogue colours this year.  Unfortunately this is a problem outside our control as we can only believe what the labels on the boxes tell us.

We have done our usual round of shows and were pleased to meet many of you on our travels. It is always good to put a face to a name on an order form.  Thank you also to all our customers who have been in touch with us over the year to report back on results.  It helps us to get feedback, even if it is to try to sort out problems!  Keep up the contact either by phone, email or post.

Best wishes to you all and let's hope for better growing in 2009.

How to read the catalogue listings.

The name of the variety is preceded by a three figure number and then one or more letters.

These refer to the classification (size of floret and colour) and to the flowering time.

For example 454M ‘RED HOT’ (Bloggs 1999) 8;23;30.

The 4 means that the flower is 400 size (large flowered:4.5 inches plus across bottom floret)

and the 54 means that it is red (54 is medium red). The M means that it flowers mid-season.

First digit = 5: 500 size (giant-flowered: 5.5 inches plus across)

First digit = 4: 400 size (large-flowered: 4.5 inches plus across)

First digit = 3: 300 size (medium-flowered: 3.5 inches plus across)

First digit = 2: 200 size (small-flowered: 2.5 inches plus across)

First digit = 1: 100 size (miniature-flowered: under 2.5 inches across)

The other two digits refer to the colour and shade as in the table below:

Text Box:  COLOUR          PALE               LIGHT              MED                 DEEP        OTHER
 White                00
 Green                02                    04

 Rose                 60                    62                     64                     66             68 (Black-rose)
 Lavender           70                    72                     74                     76             78 (Purple)
 Violet                80                    82                     84                     86
 Tan                   90
 Smoky                                     92                     94                     96             98 (Brown)

An ODD number as 3rd digit = conspicuous mark or colour contrast.
 EXAMPLES: 354 = medium-sized medium red.  501 = giant-sized white with a blotch or mark
 of some kind.
 E = early  M = mid-season  L = late.

After the name of the variety is the breeder’s name and year of intro-duction, and three numbers (e.g. 8;23;30) which refer to the number of florets which will stay open together (8), the number of buds (23) and the length of the flower spike in inches (30). This information is only given for exhibition varieties.
